Grip Material Shock Absorption, Compared
The grip is the last thing standing between clubhead impact and your hand — and the material choice matters more than most golfers realize.
Every fitting question eventually comes back to the same point of contact: the grip. It's the only part of the club your hands actually touch, which makes its material composition one of the most direct levers we have for reducing shock without changing anything about how the club performs. We test three broad grip categories on nearly every fitting, and each behaves noticeably differently under our sensor readings.
Standard Rubber
Standard rubber compounds are the default on most off-the-rack clubs because they're durable and inexpensive to produce at scale — not because they're optimized for comfort. In our testing, standard rubber consistently shows the highest shock transfer of the three main categories, particularly on off-center strikes where a firmer compound doesn't have much give to absorb the initial spike.
Corded
Corded grips weave fiber material through the rubber compound, primarily to improve traction in wet or humid conditions. That texture has a secondary effect on feedback: the added surface structure can actually increase perceived vibration for some players, even though grip security improves. We recommend corded grips selectively — useful for wet climates or sweaty hands, but not usually our first choice for a golfer prioritizing comfort above all else.
Soft Polymer
Soft polymer and elastomer compounds are purpose-built to cushion impact, and it shows in our readings: shock transfer typically drops meaningfully compared to standard rubber, sometimes by close to a third depending on the specific compound and durometer rating. The tradeoff is durability — softer compounds tend to wear and hydrate at a rate advisable to replace slightly more often than firmer rubber.
A softer grip alone, with no other changes to the club, is frequently the single biggest one-variable comfort improvement we can offer in a session.
Durometer Matters as Much as Category
Within any of these three categories, durometer — a measure of hardness — varies significantly between models. A firm "soft polymer" grip and a soft "soft polymer" grip from different manufacturers can differ almost as much from each other as either does from a standard rubber grip. We test specific models rather than relying on marketing category alone.
Grip Size Compounds the Effect
Material choice and grip size interact: an undersized grip in any material forces more hand tension to maintain control through impact, which increases perceived shock regardless of the compound's inherent dampening. We always check size alongside material during a fitting, since fixing one without the other leaves comfort gains on the table.

If you've never tried a soft polymer grip, it's one of the lowest-cost, highest-impact comfort changes available — often noticeable within a single practice session, well before any other part of the club is touched.
