Steel, Graphite, and Multi-Material Behave Very Differently at Impact
Steel transmits more feedback at impact by nature, which some players value for feel and control on iron shots. Graphite naturally dampens more vibration and weighs less, which is why it's standard in drivers and increasingly common in irons for players prioritizing comfort.
Multi-material shafts combine a steel tip section with a graphite body specifically to blend the control of steel with the vibration dampening of graphite — a category we reach for often when a client wants iron feel without full graphite's added flex.
Two Numbers That Shape Feel Together
Shaft Weight
Lighter shafts tend to play softer and are easier to swing at a comfortable tempo, which indirectly reduces strain by lowering the effort needed to generate speed.
Flex Rating
Flex describes how much a shaft bends and releases relative to your swing speed — a mismatch in either direction can increase tension and vibration at impact.
Torque
Lower torque generally feels more stable for faster, more aggressive swings, while higher torque can add a softer, more cushioned release for smoother tempos.
Damping Technology Beyond the Basic Spec Sheet
Some shafts include internal dampening layers or tip-section designs specifically engineered to absorb vibration before it reaches the grip — features that don't show up on a standard flex-and-weight label. Tip stiffness also matters more than most golfers realize: a shaft that's too stiff in the tip section for your swing can transmit a sharper, more sudden shock on off-center strikes, even if the overall flex rating looks correct on paper.
