Insert technology has quietly become one of the biggest comfort levers in modern club design, even though it rarely gets top billing in marketing copy focused on distance and forgiveness. An insert is a separate piece of material, usually polymer or a multi-layer composite, placed behind or within the striking face specifically to change how the club feels and sounds at impact.
Why Manufacturers Started Using Inserts
As club heads became more hollow and forgiving, engineers needed a way to control the resulting sound and feel — a fully hollow cavity without an insert can produce a harsh, tinny sensation at impact despite good ball speed. Inserts solve this by absorbing and dissipating vibration internally, shaping both the acoustic and tactile experience independent of the club's core performance geometry.
Insert Placement: Face vs. Cavity
Face inserts sit directly behind the striking surface and interact with the ball at the moment of contact, which affects both feel and, to a smaller degree, spin and launch characteristics. Cavity inserts sit deeper in the head and primarily affect sound and vibration without contacting the ball directly. Putters most often use face inserts; irons more commonly use cavity inserts positioned behind the hitting area.
A forged blade and a well-designed insert cavity back can produce nearly identical launch numbers while feeling like two completely different clubs in the hand.
Material Categories
Thermoplastic elastomers are common for their consistent dampening and durability. Multi-layer composite inserts combine materials of different densities to target specific frequency ranges, often tuned to reduce the sharp, high-frequency component of impact vibration specifically. Softer single-material inserts prioritize overall feel; multi-layer designs generally do a better job of reducing shock without sacrificing feedback golfers rely on to judge distance.
What Inserts Don't Fix
An insert reduces vibration at the point of contact, but it can't correct a lie angle mismatch or an undersized grip — both of which contribute to shock through separate mechanisms. We treat insert selection as one part of a full comfort fitting rather than a standalone solution, since the biggest gains usually come from addressing multiple variables together.
